40G Products Application Scenarioes

1. Router Interconnect

         Aggregate 4 or 10pcs 10GE signals onto a 40 or 100G wavelength for transport --costs associated with deploying and managing multiple 10G wavelengths between router nodes are reduced

         IPoDWDM applications where the 40G or 100G transponders are located on the routing equipment--eliminating transponder costs

2. Data Center Interconnect

         The rapid growth of Internet and cloud computing drives very large bandwidth demand inside and between data centers

         Data center applications (e.g. financial, healthcare, government) require extreme resiliency, driving the need for high-capacity 40G/100G interconnection between data centers

         Video- and data-intensive applications (e.g. Netflix, YouTube, World of Warcraft, etc.) also drive very strong bandwidth demand

3. Metro Aggregation

         Bandwidth requirements in the metro are increasing, such as mobile backhaul, broadband access, and delivery of high capacity-business services are driving the growth

         The move to LTE and substantial growth in smartphones is driving backhaul requirements past 1G per cell site

         Business services should be progressed to the point where enterprises are seeking 40G or 100G services

         The same aggregation requirement holds true for operators building broadband access networks supporting large amounts of video traffic for residential customers

4. Scaling Optical Capacity

         Upgrading wavelengths to 40G or 100G increases capacity 4 or 10 times and reduces floor space and power requirements, bringing maximum link capacity to approximately 4Tb or 10Tb respectively

         Operators are taking a TCO (total cost of ownership) approach, claiming that 40G/100G presents a more cost-effective solution for expanding network capacity, particularly if the operator would otherwise have to pull new fiber, install new line systems, and deal with the limitations of parallel 10G systems to satisfy bandwidth demand

5. Upgrading Submarine Networks

         Some of the 40G/100G coherent solutions available in the market have long-reach or ultra-longreach capabilities, making the technology applicable for use in unrepeatered, festoon, and even  transoceanic submarine links

         Subsea cable operators are struggling to increase capacity to keep up with skyrocketing demand. Installing new cable plant is both time-consuming and expensive, so subsea cable operators have been upgrading 10G channels to 40G and are now looking at 100G solutions

         The business case for upgrading working 10G cables to 40G/100G line rates is much easier to prove in versus building new links, especially given the amount of time and capital expense required
