What kind of data centers do operators need in the 5G era?

First, due to the breakthrough of data transmission bottleneck such as bandwidth and delay, intelligent terminals and IOT devices are no longer limited by the computing power of the device itself, but can be leveraged to the cloud to get more powerful data processing capabilities. Therefore, it challenges the platform service capability and support capability of the operator cloud data center.

Secondly, with the rapid development of HD mobile video, AR, VR, driverless, vehicle networking, smart home and other new businesses, it is required that the network can provide ultra-low latency, localized business processing, customization and other specific capabilities. This needs to sink part of the mobile core network, closer to the content source.

For example, advanced technology such as driverless vehicle has very high requirements for real-time data such as vehicle running status and road condition. At the same time, frequent interaction with data center needs to be maintained. Therefore, these new requirements will challenge the capabilities of the operator's cloud data center.

Finally, 5G technology will also stimulate a large number of business innovations. The increasing types of operators’ business will also increase the complexity of technology and the difficulty of management. This requires operators to be equipped with agile and flexible applications, and also have strong automation and management capabilities.

It is not difficult to see that the exact challenge for the telecom operators is from the rear of the platform in 5G era. So, how should telecom operators build the 5G - era cloud data center? In HUAWEI's view, telecom operators need to pay attention to the following areas:

First, edge calculation.

As mentioned earlier, in the 5G era, AR, VR, V2X and other Internet of things services have very high requirements for network delay and rate. It not only needs to move the network function and business processing function down to the location near the access network, but also provides higher requirements for the computing and forwarding capabilities. And the edge calculation can meet the needs very well without doubt.

Second, intelligent engine.

Image and video recognition of wireless video surveillance scenarios, analysis of GPS location of the vehicle trajectory and driving behavior preference of car networking scenarios, optimization of traffic congestion, violation detection and traffic lights of intelligent transportation, prediction of population density and moving mode of the wisdom city and power use distribution and peak forecast of smart grid will emerge in 5G era.

Third, more efficient hardware form.

5G proposed 100 times rate and bandwidth compared to the 4G network, and more harsh demand on the reliability, security and delay to meet the needs of future virtual reality, ultra high-definition video, intelligent manufacturing, automatic driving and other typical industry application scenarios.
