With the rapid development of the communication data center, the demand for bandwidth is getting higher and higher, and the transmission rate of the optical module is getting faster and faster. This is an inevitable trend. Although 100G has occupied a very important market now, however, looking back at the development of optical modules, from the earliest 1*9 and GBIC encapsulation to the popular optical modules such as CFP and QSFP28, the shape of optical modules is getting smaller and smaller. The speed of optical modules has also developed from 155M, 622M, 1.25G, 2.5G, 4.25G, 10G, 40G to the current 100G, 200G even 400G optical modules.

Many experts predict that 2018 is the year of 100G optical module's rapid development. Compared with another CFP package of 100G, QSFP28 has more advantages, such as high density, low cost and low power consumption. And now, the 100G QSFP28 optical module has been derived from a number of categories, with different optical module standards and suitable for different transmission applications.

Below we take the 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 2KM optical module as an example to introduce the parameters of the 100G QSFP28 optical module in detail.

1:4 channel full duplex optical module

What is the 4 channel optical module?

The 4 channel optical module uses the same fiber, both of which can transmit the wavelength of 4 channels at the same time.

2: the rate of transmission data is up to 26Gbps per second

It's easy to understand. The transmission rate of 100G QSFP28 optical module is 100G, while the optical module is transmitted by a 4 channel optical fiber, so the transmission data rate can reach up to 26Gbps per second.

3: the built-in CDR circuit of the receiver and transmitting channel

This is about the structure of the optical module. The optical module is composed of optoelectronic devices, functional circuits and optical interfaces. The optoelectronic devices include two parts of transmission and reception. The transmitting part is: signal input rate of semiconductor laser driven by the drive chip processing within (LD) or light emitting diode (LED) emitting light modulation signal corresponding to the rate, with the internal automatic control circuit of optical power, the optical signal output power stability. The receiving part is: the optical signal input module of a certain bit rate is converted from the light detection diode to the electrical signal after the input module of the light signal. An electrical signal that outputs the corresponding bit rate after the preamplifier.

4: low power consumption

The power consumption of different model parameters is different, and 100G is generally 3.5-9w according to the different encapsulation. So the power of this 100G QSFP28 optical module is "3.5W", which is a good aspect.

5: hot plugged

According to the way of use, the optical module can be divided into non hot pluggable and hot pluggable.

6:LC interface

Fiber optic connectors can be divided into FC type, SC type, LC type, ST type and KTRJ type.

7: temperature  0°C to +70°C

By observing the optical module temperature, we can know the optical module is industrial grade module or commercial grade module; commercial grade is 0°C to +70°C; industrial grade is -40°C to +85°C.

In addition to the 100G QSFP28 optical module, the 100G QSFP28 high-speed cable has also been widely welcomed, because this product can greatly reduce the cost of 100G short distance transmission. There are two main types of 100G QSFP28 high speed cable: QSFP28 to QSFP28 high-speed cable and QSFP28 to SFP28 high speed cable. QSFP28 to QSFP28 high-speed cable ends are all QSFP28 optical fiber transceiver device; QSFP28 to SFP28 high-speed cable is on the one end is QSFP28 optical fiber transceiver device, the other end is 4 SFP28 optical fiber transceiver device. In general, the length of the 100G QSFP28 high speed cable is not more than 5m.
