After the 100G, who will be the favorite of the market?

Although the 100G optical module has become the mainstream of the market, the demand for bandwidth, port density and system energy consumption is still improving. This further promotes technology to move towards 200G, 400G or higher speed system.


With the continuous revision of the standard version of 200G/400G, the standard of 200G/400G optical module has been synchronized. In fact, for the next stage of development, the use of 200G or 400G has always been the object of the industry, and the commercial phase of the competition must be more intense.


The 400G optical module types includes CDFP, CFP8, QSFP-DD, and OSFP. CDFP is the earliest 400G optical module form factor, which has been released from 2014 and upgraded to V3. CFP8 is a new member of the CFP family after CFP4 and has a larger size. QSFP-DD is a popular type. In addition to its slightly longer size, it is basically the same with QSFP28. However, there are two rows of gold fingers on both sides, which will not increase the width of the module while the number of signals doubles.


OSFP is a new type of 400G optical module. It has eight high-speed electrical channels. It still supports 32 OSFP ports of each 1U front panel, and 12.8 Tbps per 1U. With the integrated radiator, the heat dissipation performance can be greatly improved, and the 15W power module can be realized in the switch chassis with the traditional air flow.

Compared with 100G, the 400G system can further enhance the network capacity on the basis of 100G and reduce the transmission cost per bit. Because in the direction of 40G/100G products, the four channel parallel architecture is the most cost-effective and high bandwidth optical packaging platform. It has been proven that for the future, both 4x50Gx2 architecture and 4X100G architecture will be cost-effective.


Although the 400G module supports the application of 200G, the module type for the 200G application is "Micro QSFP".



Micro QSFP has 4 differential pairs, can support the current 100G application module. Compared to QSFP28 100G, it is smaller, while its panel density is 33% increased. Micro QSFP will account for a large advantage in volume and density on the panel, at the same time it is with the heat sink, which will have better heat radiation.


With the rapid development of mobile Internet, cloud computing, big data and other technologies, the entire communication industry needs to upgrade the network to a higher level after 10G-40G-100G or 10G-25G-100G. Who will follow 100G as the next favorite in the market, it is difficult to make a conclusion at the moment; but as far as the current market situation and technological development are concerned, the 400G optical module is more advantageous.
